Project Description

In this project, I create an immersive environment based on a unique story. The narrative will guide the design process, influencing the theme, atmosphere, and spatial elements. By translating the story’s emotions and themes into physical or virtual spaces, I aim to craft an environment that offers a meaningful and engaging experience.

Story

In a sunlit garden, a grandmother and her curious granddaughter spent their days tending to flowers. One day, the little girl asked, "Grandma, why are my eyes so big? "Her grandmother replied with a smile, "When your mother was expecting you, she ate too many blueberries, making your eyes big and round, just like the color of the sky." The granddaughter giggled and asked about a butterfly fluttering by. "This butterfly's color is my favorite," her grandmother said. "And what's yours?" the grandmother asked. The girl proudly showed her yellow handkerchief, pinned to her shirt. Five years later, after her grandmother passed away, the granddaughter returned to the old house. The garden, once vibrant, was now dried out. Feeling lost, she laid down in her grandmother’s room and drifted into a vivid dream. In it, the same butterfly appeared, glowing softly in the darkness. She followed it through a portal into a world filled with glowing flowers and Sakura trees. There, she saw her grandmother, lovingly tending the garden. Just as she reached out to her, the dream faded, and she awoke, inspired. Determined to revive the neglected garden, the granddaughter began to tend to it with care, bringing life back to the place where they had shared so many cherished moments. As the flowers bloomed once more, she felt her grandmother’s love surrounding her, like the glowing butterfly in her dream.

Moodboard

While creating the mood board, I drew inspiration from various movies, video games, real scenarios like Dzukou Valley, and added a touch of fantasy with elements like flowers and fireflies

3d Assets

The 3D models of the house, trees, and butterfly were downloaded from open-source libraries. The primary focus of the project was on designing the environment rather than creating 3D models from scratch. Using pre-made assets allowed me to concentrate on assembling and enhancing the scene to create an immersive and visually appealing environment, ensuring efficient use of time and resources.

3D Particles

To create the firefly effect, I used the Niagara particle system in Unreal Engine. I designed a GPU sprite-based emitter to simulate the glowing movement of fireflies. By controlling the spawn rate and particle size, I achieved a natural density and scale. I added a glow material with emissive properties to mimic the luminescence of real fireflies. Finally, I implemented randomized movement and flickering light intensity to make the fireflies appear dynamic and lifelike, creating an enchanting night scene.

Niagara Particles are a visual effects system in Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) and Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) used for creating and previewing particle effects in real-time. They are a powerful tool for simulating various types of effects, such as:

- Fire, smoke, and fog
- Water and ocean simulations
- Explosions and debris
- Magic and spell effects
- Weather and atmospheric effects

Ground Material

Grass Material

To design the environment, I utilized Quixel Bridge to source high-quality materials and 3D assets. I incorporated a variety of textures and foliage to create a realistic and immersive scene. The materials were carefully selected to match the natural aesthetic of the firefly environment, enhancing the visual appeal and authenticity. Using Quixel's rich library allowed me to streamline the process and focus on crafting a vibrant and lifelike setting for the firefly effect.
